Defensins

Defensins are a large and growing family of small, structurally related cationic peptides of about 30 amino acids in length characterized by multiple disulphide bridges. They are utilized by a range of species from insects to humans as a common mechanism of host defence. They are active against many Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, fungi and viruses such as HIV.

CSS's experience in folding proteins allows us to form the correct disulphide bonds in mild oxidizing conditions ensuring high yields of the correctly folded structure which is vital for maximal biological activity.

We are also able to form disulphide bridges selectively which is useful where problems are encountered with natural folding protocols. This is important where, for example, analogues of the native molecule are being synthesized.

CSS  has synthesized a number of defensin peptides for our customers, including:

Name of Molecule
Human:
β-defensin-1 hBD-1
β-defensin-2 hBD-2
β-defensin-107
Human neutrophil peptide-1 hNP-1
Human neutrophil peptide-2 hNP-12
Mouse:
β-defensin-1 mBD-1
β-defensin-2 mBD-2
